Notably, these updates are now arriving before the corresponding patches for Pixel phones—a pattern that began last month and continues with the August 2024 update. Like its predecessor, this latest patch focuses solely on addressing known security vulnerabilities, but there's an unexpected element to this rollout.
Google announced the new Wear OS 4 security patch for the Pixel Watch in its support forums. The TWD9.240805.001.A2 build, as described in the brief changelog, includes "the latest security patches." However, the full details of the vulnerabilities addressed won't be available until Google publishes the August 2024 Pixel Watch security bulletin.
To get the update, you can either wait for Google to automatically push it to your device or manually check for it by navigating to Settings > System > System updates and tapping the watch icon on the "Your watch is up to date" screen.
Interestingly, even though this update is labeled as the August 2024 security patch, the System updates page on your Pixel Watch will still display "July 2024." This discrepancy, despite the correct build number (240805.001.A2), suggests that Google may have overlooked updating the security patch date. Nonetheless, rest assured that your device is protected with the latest security measures.
Wear OS 5 and Upcoming Pixel Watch Launch
Looking ahead, Google's next major event is slated for August 13th, where we anticipate the launch of the Pixel 9 series, the rumored Pixel Buds Pro 2, and the Pixel Watch 3 in both 41mm and 45mm sizes. This new smartwatch is expected to debut with Wear OS 5.
Unveiled at Google I/O 2024, Wear OS 5 is based on Android 14 and promises significant power and efficiency enhancements for better performance and extended battery life. Following the launch of the Pixel Watch 3, Wear OS 5 is likely to be available for the first and second-generation Pixel Watches, potentially with the September firmware update.
